The Awe of Existence

In the movie Jesus of Montreal, one of the characters comments that one day the earth will be annihilated and that there will be no sign that man ever existed. I don’t think this is a pessimistic statement. On the contrary, the smaller and insignificant we are, the bigger and more magnificent the universe we are a part of.

We are of no consequence to anybody other than ourselves and rightly so. But it’s our privilege to be able to feel more awe of this universe we live in any than any other species can. That’s what makes us blessed.

I'm not too sure of that. The impact of a single being may be minuscule. But inconsequential? I sometimes look at our race (or even our planet/universe) as a single being, a sum of of us all through time and space.
